About the Central Okanagan Rugby Enthusiasts (CORE)

  • Founded in January of 2010.
  • Designed to grow and develop the rugby community in the Central Okanagan.
  • Serves rugby enthusiasts, players, coaches, referees, trainer/managers, school teams, post-secondary teams, and adult teams in four Canadian communities – Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland, and West Kelowna.
  • Focused on three key types of rugby - 15-a-side rugby, sevens rugby, and touch rugby.
  • Established as a not-for-profit society on March 10, 2010. (Society #S0056434)
  • CORE Kick-off Meeting held on April 19, 2010.  Keynote presenter: Shane Thompson.
  • CORE Endowment Fund established on April 19, 2010, managed by the Canadian Rugby Foundation.
  • Ken Boe initiates touch rugby for 180+ students in seven SD23 elementary schools. Capri Insurance              provides a ball for every player - Sept. 2010.
  • First Annual General Meeting - November 20, 2010.  Keynote presenter: Glenn Ennis.
  • Al and Barb Perry initiate ‘In Memoriam’ and will-based legacy donations to the CORE Endowment Fund – Nov. 2010.
  • CORE Top 40 list released for first time on May 24, 2011, identifying the best 40 high school players in the region.
  • CORE launches first-ever touch rugby league in the region.  100+ athletes on eight teams participate in the league, sponsored by Rusty's Steakhouse and Sports Bar. -
  • CORE launches first annual Okanagan Summer Rugby Festival, held August 2 - 14, 2011.
  • CORE hosts BC Rugby Hall of Fame Dinner in Kelowna - Ro Hindson inducted - August 12, 2011.
  • CORE hosts Canadian Rugby Championship game - BC Bears vs Prairie Wolf Pack - August 13, 2011.
  • Second AGM held December 3, 2011.  Keynote speaker: Gareth Rees.
  • CORE hosts rugby league international - BC Bulldogs vs Utah Avalanche - August 18, 2012.
  • Third AGM held January 26, 2013.  Keynote speaker: Mark Wyatt.
  • Fourth AGM held January 18, 2014.  Keynote speaker: Gary Dukelow.
  • CORE supports first annual RugbyDAZE Sevens Tournament, held July 17 - 18, 2014.
  • CORE hosts '125 Years of BC Rugby Gala' at Grand Okanagan - August 15, 2014.
  • CORE hosts Canadian Rugby Championship game - BC Bears vs Prairie Wolf Pack - August 16, 2014.
  • Fifth AGM held November 27, 2014.  Keynote speaker: Andrea Burk.
  • CORE Endowment Fund reaches $100,000 benchmark - March 2015.  Fund will support $3,500 in annual sport bursaries forever.
  • CORE hosts Western Canada Rugby Championships for U16 Men, U18 Women, U18 Men, and Senior Women - August 2015.
  • CORE hosts Western Canada Rugby Championships for U14 Men and U15 Women - August 2015.
  • Sixth AGM held November 28, 2015.  Keynote speaker: Al Charron.
  • Seventh AGM held December 2, 2016.  Keynote speaker: Spence McTavish.
  • New Constitution and Bylaws passed unanimously at 2016 AGM.
