UBCO Heat Rugby Sizzles Again This Fall
Date: November 30, 2017
Two strong rugby programs had solid year at UBC this year.
35 dedicated young men, including many new faces to the program, made the UBC Men's Heat team very competitive in 2017. The team joined the BC U23 inaugural league. The Heat Men went undefeated in six league games, scoring 196 points and allowing only 51.
The men hosted the annual Hindson Cup and again retained the cup with a win against University of Calgary. UBC Okanagan was asked to host and compete in the first Western playoff for the National University 15s Championship. The University of Victoria were the eventual winners and represented Western Canada at the championships at the University of Guelph.
The Women's Heat did not enjoy the success of previous years. With many senior players graduating from the previous year, the team still elected to join the very competitive BC women's Division 1. The many fresh faces worked hard for new head coach Christian Hill. Throughout the year of Div. 1 play, the women were enthusiastic for the competition, always positive, and developed their core rugby skills. Although the team did not earn a victory, coaches feel the experience was good for developing the competitveness of the team. The Heat Women will be more competitive in 2018.
