CORE Rugby Bursaries Need Applicants!
Date: December 14, 2017
40 considerate CORE 'Founding Members' donated $100,000 to an endowment fund by 2015, assuring there would be $3,500 in bursaries for Central Okanagan graduating high school rugby players forever. Incredibly, the 2017 Central Okanagan graduating class only had four applications that met the rugby bursary requirements - play rugby in grade 12 and complete a bursary application.
There are two reasons for a decline in applications for the CORE rugby bursaries. Students must apply for the Central Okanagan Bursary and Scholarship Society (COBSS) bursaries by mid-January. Many students have missed this window in prior years. Secondly, there are a declining number of graduating rugby players - only KSS and OKM ran a full XVs program in 2017.
Five $500 CORE rugby bursaries are available each year through the COBSS. In addition, a $1,000 Courtney Walls Bursary is awarded to a local rugby player by CORE each year, if a qualified candidate can be found. If no player is identified, the number of $500 bursaries awarded is increased to seven.
COBSS applications must be completed by mid-January. Information for 2018 is listed here. The Courtney Walls is awarded to a player selected by a CORE committee. To win the Walls award, a rugby athlete must demonstrate: (a) strong rugby XVs skills, (b) good grades, (c) leadership, and (d) respect from players and coaches. In the six years of Walls bursary opportunities, only two players have qualified - Sam Overton in 2012 and Joel Henseleit in 2013.
If you are a graduating Central Okanagan rugby player, you are encouraged to make application to COBSS in the next few weeks. If you know a local graduating rugby player, give him or her a gentle reminder to get this done.
