Sam Overton Awarded the Courtney Walls Bursary
Date: June 6, 2012
The Central Okanagan Rugby Enthusiasts (CORE) society have announced the first-ever recipient of the Courtney Walls Bursary. The athlete selected is Sam Overton, captain of the 10 – 1 OKM Huskies who placed 5th in the provincial championships this year.
The award will be given annually to an OKM graduating rugby player who demonstrates key qualities of Courtney Walls, a 1982 grad from the school who lost his life tragically in 1997. The recipient must be a top rugby player, a good academic student, and be well liked by staff and students at the school. These are all characteristics that his fellow 1982 grads remember of Courtney, as they celebrate their 30th grad reunion this year.
Sam Overton was selected to the Canada U16 rugby team in 2010. He is a hard running flanker who captained the OKM Huskies to their best-ever 5th place performance at the AA Provincial Rugby Championships last weekend. Sam is a top student and is described as a natural leader by members of the OKM staff.
“Sam is a fantastic first recipient of the Courtney Walls bursary,” said Bob Callahan, key driver of the fund-raising initiative. “He sounds a lot like Court – a good player, a good student, and a good guy. We hope this bursary encourages more people to aspire to be great at the things they do while never taking themselves too seriously.”
The award is financially supported by an endowment fund launched by Bob and Linda Callahan and supported by over 20 donors so far. The fund has targeted $20,000 to sustain forever this annual bursary at the school. So far, $15,508 has been raised.
