KSS Sevens Side Shines at Provincial Tournament
Date: April 29, 2013
The following note was sent to KSS teachers today, from KSS Rugby Coach Dave Marfleet:
"The boys made KSS and interior rugby history by winning four in a row against Robert Bateman, St. Michaels, Magee and Oak Bay to make to the Provincial Semi Finals. A loss to Shawnigan Lake and a close loss to Yale followed with the boys finishing 4th in the province-unheard of for a interior team. They were a class act throughout the tourney and gained lots of respect from the elite rugby schools in the province. Thanks for your support."
KSS was in Pool C on the opening day of the tournament. After defeating St. Michael's (SMU) 14 - 7, the Owls took down Robert Bateman 7 - 5, and finished Day 1 undefeated with a 17 - 7 win over Magee,
In the quarter-final round, KSS defeated Oak Bay from Victoria 20 - 17. This took Kelowna into rare air - the first time a non-coastal team was in the Final Four. After a tough 36 - 5 loss to the powerful Shawnigan Lake side, KSS took on Yale in the 3rd/4th game. Described as, "one of the surprise packages in the tournament," the Owls were a strong contender in that final match. Yale, led by provincial under-18 sevens star Spencer Miller, were able to win the game 29 - 12 in the late stages.
KSS players return to 15's play this week with a home game against Kalamalka on Wednesday.
