KSS Loses Heartbreaker at BC Rugby Provincials
Date: May 25, 2014
It looked like the perfect story was unfolding. After falling behind 12 - 10 at the half in the first round of their BC Boys High School Rugby Championships game against Yale, the KSS Owls fought back to take an 18 - 12 lead with just 10 minutes left.
Unfortunately, with Yale regaining control of the loose, they were able to score a penalty kick and an unconverted try to win the game 20 - 18 in the last few minutes.
KSS had the more talented backline and they were able to make gains there no matter who had the ball. Yale's 9-10 connection was weak and it collapsed often under strong KSS pressure. But Yale's strength was up front, particularly in the rucks and mauls. They were able to secure more than their share of ball which in the end was the difference.
KSS will head to Abbotsford next week with the goal of winning the consolation side of the tournament.
It was not a good day for interior sides, as they lost all four games on the day to lower mainland teams. Those scores are listed below. Fulton from Vernon dropped out of the tournament at the last minute, leading to one cancelled game.
Southridge (Surrey) defeated Kalamalka (Vernon) 39 - 10
Robert Bateman (Abbotsford) defeated South Kamloops 53 - 12
Yale (Abbotsford) defeated Kelowna 20 - 18
DW Poppy (Langley) defeated LV Rogers (Nelson) 24 - 12
