UBC Heat Men Take Two in Alberta

Date: October 6, 2014

Author: Ken Krohman

The UBCO Heat Mens Rugby team travelled to Calgary this past weekend and returned with two solid performances against the two Calgary university sides.
On Saturday the Heat defeated their rivals, University of Calgary Dinos, 24-5 in a spirited match that looked early on to be a one-sided affair as the Heat clearly out-played the Dinos with effective back play and aggressive tackling.

The Dinos responded in the 2nd half by slowing the game with more physical play utilizing their size advantage among the forwards. This strategy served to raise the temperature of the match as these two teams have a history of physical competition.

In the end the Heat were up to the challenge with a  U of C unable to break through the Heat’s commitment to match the physical play and the teams battled through a scoreless 2nd half leaving the Heat with the decided victory over the Alberta university league number-one-ranked team.
Sunday’s opponent, Mount Royal University,  was billed to be not as challenging for the Heat allowing coach, Chris Haynes, to start the game with much of the Heat’s development team personnel.  Again the Heat’s clear advantage with the ball in hand produced an early lead as the younger starters played with confidence and displayed good pace.

Mount Royal produced solid spurts of offense in addition to capitalizing on the odd Heat defensive lapse to keep within striking distance on the scoreboard.  It was a one-point game early in the second half when coach Haynes began to sprinkle a few of the 1st team positional players into the lineup.  That boost proved to be too much for Mount Royal as the Heat pushed on for the 38-25 victory.
University of Calgary will have a chance to revenge its loss to UBCO when they and the University of Alberta squad travel to Kelowna for the Heat’s 4th Annual Hindson Cup to be played on October 24.  The day will include four match ups with Simon Fraser University rounding out the BC representation in the tournament draw.  All games will be played at City Park Oval with the feature match being the UBCO v. U of C rematch.  Kick off is at 2:45.

The day will also feature the undefeated UBCO Heat women taking on Cowichan in a BC Rugby Union league game.  The women  kick off at noon.
