UBCO Women Win 1st Division, Set Sights on CIS
Date: November 24, 2014
The UBCO women’s rugby team beat Meraloma 31-0 on Saturday to win the BCRU 1st division, finishing the season undefeated. Kate Smith and Kelsey Wuerstl each scored 2 tries and outstanding team captain Jacqueline Dubreuil added a single try. Chloe Worrall converted three of the tries to bring the final score to 31 - 0.
This is only the second year of formal competition for the Heat Rugby Program and they have demonstrated impressive growth and development. Last year they lost a close final to Abbotsford to finish second in the BCRU 2nd division and this year they moved up to 1st division and have gone undefeated.
Coach Rob O’Brien, stated that he was proud of the Heat team and program. “These players really deserved 1st place” “We have players who would start on any CIS team in Canada and one or two who are bona fide all stars, Jacqueline Dubreuil is a prime example, she is an absolute force on the field, both offensively and defensively”
Coach O’Brien believes that his team would be competitive in the CIS now and with focused recruiting could eventually be a national contender. “We have built a capable team without actively recruiting or offering competitive scholarships” “If we had the same resources as other varsity programs, I am certain we could reach the top of the CIS West within 5 years”
