Crows Men and Women Go to BC Finals

Date: May 5, 2015

Author: Dennis Eden

On Saturday in front of a large supportive home crowd, the Crows Men's side defeated the Brit Lions Rugby Club from Delta 22 - 10 in a tough hard-fought match.  This Mainland Div. 3A Semi Final game was set up last weekend with the Crows decisive victory over Burnaby Lake 42-10 and the Brit Lions trumping the Scribes 30 – 5.

The Crows defeated this same Brit Lions side back in March 24-5. Both clubs were very successful and finished the season first and third.  The Crows finished the season 8-1, clinching first place.

The game started with the Brits taking first blood against the initial flow of the game with a well deserved try after a Crows turnover.  Keeping the ball after several phases, the Brits steadily moved towards the Crows goal then the touchdown and convert for the early 7-0 lead.

It took the Crows 11 minutes to reply despite having ample possession. After repeated pressure, outside centre Marken Katinic topped off a sustained forward drive.  The convert attempt by Barak Paul was wide.

The battled continued until the 20th minute when hooker Richard Brewer scored on the goal line after a 5 metre set scrum. The convert by Paul was again just off the mark but gave the Crows a slim 3 point point lead that carried into the half, 10-7.

The Crows started the second half quickly when team captain and outstanding flanker Danny Illichmann scored from a quick penalty tap on the Brits five metre line.  Paul's convert padded the lead to 10 points for a 17-7 lead only three minutes in.

The Brit Lions kicked a penalty in the 47th minute to close the gap to 7 but the Crows forward pack took control and dominated in the sets and loose play.  Most of the second half was played between the 22 metre lines until winger Jared Curry outpaced his opponents for the final scoring of the game in the 67th minute.  The final score was 22-10.

The Lady Crows won their Semi Final match by default after the Capilano RFC was unable to field a team. The previous week, the Lady Crows thumped the same Capilano side 56-12.

Both teams advance to the BCRU finals Saturday May 9th in West Vancouver. The Lady Crows will play Comox for the Women's Div 2 title. The ladies defeated Comox in one previous match 39-19.

The men will play in the Men's Div. 3A Final against Velox RFC from Victoria.  Velox finished in second place on the Island but defeated the Capilano A side 39-17.  Velox is an unknown to the Crows.

The Div. 3B final has Simon Fraser University play Chilliwack. Both victors will qualify to compete in the Saratoga Cup Provincial Div. 3 Championship Tournament hosted by Penticton Harlequins in September.
