Crows 3rds Enjoy Okanagan Rugby This Summer
Date: June 12, 2018
A new team in town has been enjoying XVs rugby play in the Okanagan Rugby Union (ORU) this spring. Affectionately called 'The Cows', the Crows 3rds have provided a much-needed Kelowna team to the ORU. Although their season has not been a success with respect to wins, it has been a great success in enabling young men who need less travel and a shorter season to enjoy their favorite sport.
Sam Billingsley, the Crows 3rds organizer, says the team is getting better with each game. "We are a much-improved team. Our last league game is this weekend against Salmon Arm. They beat us 34 - 17 in Salmon Arm earlier in the season. We expect to play much better. We've received our new jerseys, so the team is going to look pretty sharp."
The Crows 3rds will head into the ORU playoffs next weekend against Vernon, who is undefeated so far. Billingsley is optimistic. "I believe if our team puts in the work these next two weeks, we totally have a shot of making it to the ORU finals against the winner of the Penticton and Salmon Arm game."
The team is not just focused on ORU league games. They just enjoyed a rainy weekend of rugby at Penticton's ironically-named Sunfest Tournament. The team will be going to the Williams Lake Stampede rugby tournament on the Canada Day long weekend. They hope to get some sevens experience at SFU 7s on July 13th, so they can enter two sevens teams into the Center of Gravity Sevens Open Division. Lastly, in August, they’ll end the Cow’s summer at the Chilliwack Sasquatch 10s tournament.
Sam hopes the summer program has another benefit to local rugby. "After all this, hopefully we will get some players to continue to play rugby as the Crows start back up."
This weekend's game is against Salmon Arm on Saturday at 1:00 PM at Parkinson's East Field. All rugby enthusiasts are encouraged to come enjoy the last ORU league game of this vital local rugby side.
