Biggest-Ever Summer Touch Leagues Start Strong

The Killer Bunnies have something to prove. Every year, they make it to the Dai Dobbs trophy final. Every year they have to fake smile for the team that narrowly defeated them. If the first week of play is any indicator, they have no intention of letting that happen in 2018.

First up in the Bunnies' league hopper was Riskey Wicks, a team that is a high-skilled composite of two Competitive teams from last year. The result - the Bunnies burnt the Wicks 7 - 4. Next up? The 2017 Dai Dobbs trophy champions - The Scarecrows - the very Scarecrows that shut the KB's out 3 - 0 in the prior year's final. No problem for the on-a-mission Bunnies on this day - they took the stuffing out of the Scarecrows, sending a 10 - 4 message that spelled out their intent for the season. Hell hath no 'furry' like a bunny scorned.

235 registered players on 15 teams (8 Competitive League and 7 Recreational League) played two games on the opening night. The Competitive League started league play immediately. In addition to the Killer Bunnies opening on an undefeated run, the quick Touch & Go side also were undefeated, scoring the winning try on the hooter against a competitive Nuts & Jugs side. Four Competitive teams won one game and lost one game, giving a tiny hint of the quality of every team in this league.

The Recreational League, with one team less, used this first week for exhibition games. This allowed the two new Rec teams - Metro Mavericks and the Ash Kickers - to get a good sense of how the game is played. Although neither team won either of their exhibition games, you can see the athleticism that will make them both competitive soon. Last year's Silver Cup winners, the Alcoballics, looked good in their exhibition matches, as did the suddenly prolific Painkillers. Their game in Week Three will be a good one.

Here are the Competitive standings and scores from Week One. The games of Week Two for Competitive and Recreational leagues are also listed.
