Rugby Community Works Together on Fund-Raiser

There are a lot of moving parts in our local rugby community. On Sunday, September 23rd, they will all come together to participate in the 80 Minutes fund-raiser in support of local cancer research and cancer patient care.

80 Minutes refers to the length of an adult rugby game. The 80 Minutes fund-raiser will involve 100+ local rugby enthusiasts circling the Apple Bowl track for 80 minutes. Some will run, some will jog, some will walk. All will raise funds in support of local cancer services.

The idea began in a conversation between Cam Pierce and members of the CORE Board. Cam's mom had a very positive experience at the Sindi Hawkins Center on Royal Avenue. CORE was looking for an opportunity to give something back to the local community. The 80 Minutes fund-raiser is a result of that conversation.

“I couldn’t be more grateful for the support the Okanagan rugby community has provided for the 80 Minutes fundraiser," said Cam. "Every family has been touched by cancer in some way so this is a perfect opportunity to exemplify the true value of rugby - a strong sense of community."

"It is important to know that the Sindi Hawkins Center hosts families from all over the Interior of BC. Our family drove daily from Vernon for my Moms radiation, we also met people from Barriere, Osoyoos, Sicamous, and even further. Therefore, my family and especially my Mom (Susan Pierce) are very happy with where this is going and look forward to it becoming an annual event that will benefit our community and beyond”.

Cam's thoughts struck a chord with the CORE Board. "Rugby is growing rapidly in the Central Okanagan, in part because of strong support from the local community," said Doug Manning, President of the Central Okanagan Rugby Enthusiasts (CORE). "Our Board was searching for a place to focus our thanks. Cam's presentation gave us the cause we were looking for."

Ten different local rugby groups will participate in 80 Minutes on September 23. They include the Kelowna Crows, UBC Okanagan Rugby XVs/Sevens, the Vernon Jackals, the Over-40 Priest Valley Vicars, UBCO Intramural Touch Rugby, the Central Okanagan Rugby Development (CORD) Academy, Grade 8 Rugby, the Summer Touch Rugby League, Okanagan Rugby Referees, and the CORE membership.

Interested in being a part of the 80 Minutes fund-raiser?

If you'd like to run or walk on Sunday, September 23, go to the 80 Minutes fundraiser website and sign up. Each participant will try to raise $100 or more for the cause.
