Savage Heat Does Not Deter Touch Rugby Warriors

inner-warrior

Warriors are people who rise up when the going gets tough. 37 degree heat, level 5 smoke conditions, bodies worn out from a weekend of rugby or excessive beaching - none of these things can prevent an avid touch rugbian from playing their game.

Tonight, 143 touch rugby warriors arrived to play. This is their Week Five story.

There was the previously undefeated Alcoballics in the Rec League. Three women and two men showed up, the rest of their team absent - battered from a full weekend of sevens at Center of Gravity. Did they play anyway - yes. Two full games, just the five of them, no subs. Warriors.

There was the newest Rec team - the Ash Kickers, a team of good athletes learning how to play this touch rugby game - some of them fresh from a busy week of literally fighting fires in our community. Did they avoid the fiery skies and skip the week - no. They took on the Metro Mavericks and the Painkillers - searching for their first win. Warriors.

There was The Hammers, a team of quality players who are climbing the Competitive League ladder and are now in 4th place. Did they get complacent, resting on their laurels and their pink shirts? No. Did they allow a depleted competitor to bring on an extra player, preventing that team's players from melting in the scorching sun? Yes. Warriors with class.

To no one's surprise, the Heat of the Moment thrived in the heat at the end of the day. After holding their #2 ranked Riskey Wicks opponents to a 5 - 5 tie, they burned the #3 Killer Bunnies 5 - 1. It was a day of days for the Heat. Warriors all.

Week Five saw some excellent games, despite the oppressive incandescence from above. Full credit to all the 143 players who found their way to Parkinson on this smoldering day. Together, you are a battallion of heat-beating warriors. We salute you.
